Midwife Isa Ruhland
As a midwife I care for people through the process of family planning, the pregnancy and the postpartum time, as well as during the first year of the baby or until the weaning process. I consider those proceedings as physiological but also often challenging life-changes. The people I am allowed to support during this periods are experts for themselves and their individual needs. Therefore the background of my work is an appreciating and ressource-orientated support without hierarchy and a shared decision-making-process. I want to facilitate an empowering and self-determined journey through the beginning of parenthood and care on the basis of actual evidence and recommendations. In terms of the mandatory continuing education I regulary take part in skills trainings and workshops, I also work along quality standards and exchange experiences and information with colleagues and other professionals. I try to set up a safer space for everyone and I am constantly in a learning process concerning discrimination and other barriers. From my point of view, midwifery care is political, queer*feminist, intersectional and body-positiv and should be accessible for everyone. It is my aim to enable people to go through the process of family planning, pregnancy, childbed and early parenthood stronger and more self-competent.
Every midwife, every person and every family is different. As it is important to me that your needs and ideas match my way of working and that you feel well looked after, we can arrange an appointment to get to know each other. That way we can see if the care is right for everyone.
I like ...
... Nature and the mountains, cycling, going for coffee with lovely people, climbing, juggling, music from Renaissance to Hip-hop, traveling and art - especially printmaking.
I am ...
... honest, open, structured but also flexible and spontanous, empathic, caring, solidary, political, self-reflective, careful and queer*-feminist.
I am happy to accompany you on your journey through pregnancy. We can meet between the 18th and 22nd week of pregnancy for a parents-child consultation, which is also covered by health insurance. This consultation includes topics such as nutrition and exercise during pregnancy, other health-promoting behavior and any questions and issues you bring with you.
From the 32nd week of pregnancy, you can take advantage of a further appointment, which is also covered by health insurance.
If you are planning an outpatient birth, you can also arrange two additional midwife visits from the 22nd week of pregnancy.
Additional visits are of course also possible as a private service.
You can find more information on midwife care and health insurance refund here.
I would be happy to come to your home for a personal birth preparation course. During this half-day course, we will discuss the last time before the birth, the beginning and phases of birth, birth positions and ways of coping with labor, as well as the first time after the birth and the postpartum period. I would like to address your needs, questions and resources so that you can go into the birth and the first time with your baby stronger.
The birth preparation course can also be requested together with other parents-to-be, so that we can take a little more time together.
I am also allowed to run some antenatal classes at the SALK Parents' School. The relevant course dates can be found under the heading "dates". Click here to register via the Parents' School.
After the birth, you can take advantage of up to twelve visits from a midwife. Among other things, I will check how you and your newborn baby are feeling, assist you with the breastfeeding or feeding of your baby and support the recovery process. We have time for all questions and needs that arise during the postpartum period. I am mainly there for you in the first eight weeks after the birth during home visits and also via telephone. In addition, I also advise you on baby foods and breastfeeding until weaning.
You can find a detailed list of midwifery services in the postpartum period here.
It is very important to me to provide midwifery support and suitable information opportunities for all people, including queer* people who want to have children, during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. I try to create a safer space for you, to answer questions on the basis of current evidence and to support you according to your needs. Therefore I regularly undergo further training and am networked with other queer*sensitive working midwives and obstetricians.
Together with the training collective for queer*sensitive obstetrics and midwifery care, I also offer lectures, workshops and training courses for professionals in German-speaking countries. You can find more information here: www.queersensible-geburt.com.
I will be happy to advise you on all aspects of babywearing and show you different ways of tying a sling or using baby carriers during a home visit. We will discuss the correct position of the baby in the sling and what to consider in the different seasons. In addition, the carrying method should be back-friendly for you and suit your needs. I will bring various baby carriers and slings with me to help you find the right carrying option.
The topic of babywearing can also be covered as part of postpartum care, as well as in a separate consultation.
From the third month of life, I would be happy to come to your home for a baby massage course. Baby massage (according to Leboyer and Reich) is a great way to promote bonding, support the baby's digestion and often has a calming effect on parents and babies.
There is usually room for baby massage on a smaller scale as part of postpartum care, but you can also request a separate baby massage course.

Midwifery care is basic care and should be equally accessible to all people!
I want to make my work as barrier-free as possible and am in a constant learning process. I try to educate myself about discrimination and barriers, to think about them and to reflect my work.
Feel free to contact me if there is a financial or other barrier to midwife support - I would like to find a way together with you!
